About me, Michael Emery
“Hello there, thank you for visiting my website.
I’ve been a safety practitioner for longer than I care to remember; since way before Corporate Manslaughter and CDM and the Management Regs and the other 6-pack regulations. Before the original COSHH regulations even – that’s a long time and I have to say, it’s been a brilliant career.
I cut my teeth at Portakabin the designer, manufacturer and provider of instant building solutions and part of the Shepherd Building Group, at the time the UK’s largest privately owned company. A large organisation with multiple sites and close associations with construction, it was a fabulous place to learn the business of health and safety.
My appreciation of coaching skills began as Health & Safety Manager for Rolls-Royce & Bentley, the world famous manufacturer of high luxury motor cars. Leading a team of safety champions positioned around the business, I developed a strategic approach integrated at a practical level with quality and environmental management.
In 2000, I left for the Gulf and Almarai, one of the most vertically-integrated food manufacturing companies in the world. Employing 5000 people in 6 countries on the Arabian Peninsula, a European parallel would be growing forage in Holland, feeding it to cows in Ireland and delivering fresh milk products to supermarkets in Athens. Again, the geographic challenges meant that a coaching style, developing and supporting location safety coordinators, proved essential to my success.
I incorporated my business, Securus Health & Safety Limited, in 2009 and shortly afterwards began a long and fruitful relationship with Weetabix. It was here, leading the modernisation of health and safety management initiative, that my ideas for Coaching for safety and Engagement for safety first took shape. I’m delighted to count Weetabix still amongst my clients.
Currently, amongst other things, I’ve been supporting Greencore, a leading international producer of convenience foods, reviewing and reviving ailing OHSAS 18001 management systems and providing coaching support.
Believe it or not, I love OHSAS 18001 but my first passion is coaching. Coaches exist to be collaborative, supportive and helpful and I strongly believe that the skills coaches deploy will soon be appreciated for the value they bring to the role of the modern safety practitioner.
Thank you for reading.”
